Students Share Concerns That Artificial Intelligence Is Weakening Their Learning Capabilities, Study Finds

According to latest investigation, pupils are voicing concerns that employing AI is weakening their ability to engage academically. Numerous report it renders schoolwork “too easy”, while a portion claim it limits their creativity and stops them from learning additional competencies.

Broad Use of Artificial Intelligence Among Students

An analysis examining the usage of artificial intelligence in British educational institutions revealed that just 2% of pupils aged 13 and 18 reported they did not use AI for their schoolwork, while the vast majority indicated they frequently used it.

Adverse Influence on Skills

Despite AI’s prevalence, 62% of the learners reported it has had a unfavorable impact on their skills and development at school. One in four of the students concurred that artificial intelligence “makes it too easy for me to find the answers without doing the work myself”.

A further 12% reported AI “hinders my original thought”, while comparable figures stated they were less prone to address issues or produce innovative text.

Nuanced Understanding By Students

An expert in generative AI noted that the research was among the first to look at how students in the UK were incorporating AI into their learning.

“I am particularly impressed by the nuanced understanding displayed,” the professional said. “The fact that 60% of learners express worry that AI promotes imitation over original effort demonstrates a profound grasp of academic objectives and the technology’s advantages and drawbacks.”

The specialist continued: “Students employing this tool exhibit a remarkably advanced and mature perception of its role in their academics, a fact that is often overlooked when considering their autonomous use of technology in learning environments.”

Empirical Investigations and Wider Worries

The results correspond to scientific analyses on the use of artificial intelligence in academics. A particular research evaluated neural responses during written assignments among students using large language models and determined: “These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI’s role in learning.”

Roughly half of the numerous students polled expressed they were anxious their peers were “covertly employing artificial intelligence” for academic work without their instructors being able to identify it.

Request for Guidance and Positive Aspects

Many participants stated that they desired more help from teachers for the appropriate utilization of artificial intelligence and in judging whether its output was reliable. An initiative designed to supporting instructors with artificial intelligence instruction is being introduced.

“Some of these findings will be very interesting for teachers, especially around how much students are expecting guidance from teachers. We sometimes think there is a technological generational divide, and yet they are still looking at their teachers for guidance in how to use this technology productively, and I find that very positive,” the expert commented.

A teacher observed: “The results mirror my daily observations in the classroom. Numerous students acknowledge AI’s benefits for innovation, review, and addressing challenges, yet frequently employ it as a time-saver instead of an educational aid.”

Only 31% reported they didn’t think employing artificial intelligence had a negative influence on any of their abilities. Yet, the bulk of pupils stated using AI helped them gain new skills, for instance 18% who indicated it aided them understand issues, and 15% who stated it helped them come up with “innovative and improved” ideas.

Learner Insights

When asked to elaborate, a 15-year-old female pupil said: “My comprehension of mathematics has improved, and AI assists me in tackling complex problems.”

In addition, a young man of age 14 claimed: “My cognitive speed has increased compared to before.”
