Brave Train Staff Member Endures Critical Injuries During Multiple Knife Incident on High-Speed Service

A courageous railway employee who intervened to save passengers during a mass knife incident on a express train has sustained critical wounds, police stated on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Event

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the staff member trying to stop the attacker as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims fleeing through compartments.

The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities announced a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Response and Consequences

The incident on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been released from hospital.

A bystander filmed the individual waving a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was allegedly heard yelling, "End my life, kill me."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the brave employee of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by specialist personnel,” said a senior police official.

Labor Response and Calls for Action

Train associations were quick to praise staff and call for increased measures. One labor leader said he would be “requesting immediate discussions with government, train companies and police to guarantee that we have the strongest possible support, tools and robust procedures in place”.

A different association leader urged the rail company and authorities “to act swiftly to examine safety, to help the affected workers, and to make sure that no incident like this happens again”.

Driver Commended for Rapid Action

The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver did not halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he continued traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” stated a union representative.

Further Information

Police said they got the initial distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness recounted initially wondering if the situation was a holiday prank, but quickly realized from individuals' expressions that it was serious.

Police have confirmed there is no evidence to indicate the incident was a terror-related attack and have requested the public to come forward with any additional information.

Rail operations on the affected route are expected to have delays until Monday, with travelers recommended to defer their travel where feasible.

Individuals with information that could help the inquiry are asked to contact police by sending a message a designated number with a case code.
